BY Community Legal Aid
DATELINE Worcester, MA: Community Legal Aid, a non-profit organization that provides free legal services annually to over 9,000 low-income and elderly households in central and western Massachusetts, is pleased to announce that Marina Abraham will be the new Managing Attorney for its Worcester office. In this role, Attorney Abraham will oversee a team of attorneys, paralegals, AmeriCorps advocates, and support staff who provide civil (non-criminal) legal assistance to elders facing abuse or exploitation, at-risk students needing school-based services, victims of domestic violence seeking protective orders and/or family law assistance, people facing homelessness, and those in need of public benefits including SNAP, Social Security/SSI, and unemployment. She will also spearhead community outreach to local social service agencies and to residents of Worcester County who may be eligible for services from Community Legal Aid. Attorney Abraham will be part of a management team of five attorneys who manage Community Legal Aid’s offices in Worcester, Springfield, Northampton, Pittsfield, Greenfield and Fitchburg.
Attorney Abraham joined Community Legal Aid in 2020 as the Staff Attorney overseeing the Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) with UMass Memorial Health, where she helped the hospital address the unmet health-harming legal needs of low-income patients through collaboration, legal intervention, and advocacy. As the MLP Staff Attorney, she provided holistic legal assistance to UMass patients in matters involving eviction, reasonable accommodation requests, loss of public benefits, special education denials, and guardianships for medically complex young adults. In 2024, Attorney Abraham was promoted to the position of MLP Coordinating Attorney. She received her B.A. from the University of Massachusetts – Lowell and her J.D. from Suffolk University Law School.
Regarding her new role, Attorney Abraham commented, “As a first-generation immigrant, my family’s experience mirrors a lot of what many other immigrant families experience as new arrivals. Unfortunately, we did not have the benefit of accessing legal aid, which could have helped our family with the civil legal problems that we experienced. As Managing Attorney for Community Legal Aid, I want to make sure people in Central Mass. know that Community Legal Aid is here and how we can help people. The resources and services that Community Legal Aid provides will help strengthen our communities overall.”
