Pro Bono Spotlight: Attorney Leah Kofos

Attorney Leah Kofos, an associate at Mirick O’Connell,  accepted a case through Community Legal Aid’s Medical-Legal Partnership and helped an elderly UMass Memorial patient and his ill spouse obtain MassHealth insurance coverage.

A UMass Memorial patient underwent a leg amputation and was due to start physical therapy. Before he was to be fitted for a prosthetic leg,  it was discovered that his MassHealth coverage had been terminated because of an increase in social security disability benefits. His hospital bills were piling up and  he was wheelchair bound. His UMass Memorial provider was concerned that without MassHealth coverage, the patient would experience serious medical complications and possibly even death. The patient’s ill spouse was also kicked off MassHealth coverage. The  provider referred both patients to MLP and Attorney Kofos graciously took on both cases.

Attorney Kofos worked tirelessly to collect and submit supporting documentation, spent hours on the phone with MassHealth caseworkers, and kept the patients informed of her progress. Within a few short weeks, Attorney Kofos’ efforts were met with success. MassHealth coverage was reinstated for both patients.

Attorney Kofos’ unyielding advocacy and tenacity  made a huge difference in the lives and health of these patients. Thank you, Attorney Kofos for your compassion and hard work!
