Community Legal Aid Celebrates Full-Time Return to Franklin County

Greenfield, MA: Community Legal Aid, the non-profit civil legal aid program serving the low-income and elderly residents of Central and Western Massachusetts, is pleased to announce the return of a full-time office in Greenfield to serve low-income and elderly residents of Franklin County. While Community Legal Aid has provided comprehensive legal services to Franklin County residents out of its Northampton, Springfield, Pittsfield and Worcester offices for decades, it has only recently established an office at 14 Hope Street in Greenfield. With this expansion, Community Legal Aid has welcomed the addition of attorneys and staff who are now providing a full range of legal services including: defending against evictions and accessing affordable housing; assisting domestic violence survivors with family law issues; helping at-risk students get needed services in school; accessing public benefits and income supports for low-income households; sealing and expunging criminal records and overcoming the barriers posed by those records; and assisting elders with a variety of their most basic needs. The office’s exterior is adorned with a sign made by Blue Collar Artisans, a small business located in Easthampton, and was made possible by a City of Greenfield Storefront Improvement Grant.

Community Legal Aid recently celebrated the new office opening at a ribbon-cutting event. Over 90 members of the community attended and event, including Senator Jo Comerford, Representative Natalie Blais, and Massachusetts Director of Rural Affairs Anne Gobi.

When she spoke at the event, State Representative Natalie Blais commented on the welcoming atmosphere of Community Legal Aid’s new office at 14 Hope Street. Rep. Blais said, “The transformation [of this building] is indicative of how Community Legal Aid will transform people’s lives right here in Franklin County.  … I am extraordinarily grateful to have Community Legal Aid here at this moment in time.”

Community Legal Aid also recently secured a $50,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) grant from the City of Greenfield. This funding is being used to launch the Greenfield Homelessness Prevention Project, and to assist Greenfield residents facing the loss of affordable housing through eviction.
